The Advancing Excellence Campaign was initiated in September, 2006 with the mission to make nursing homes better places to live, work, and visit. With an unprecedented coalition of stakeholders, this voluntary effort helped focus providers, government entities, as well as professional and consumer advocates to help nursing homes measurably improve care.

In 2007, The Commonwealth Fund awarded a grant of over $354,000 and the Advancing Excellence in America’s Nursing Homes Campaign was officially launched.

What began as a two-year campaign evolved into a national movement. Over the next ten years, the Campaign identified priority quality improvement focus areas (goals), developed tools and resources focusing on systematic quality improvement, and formed Local Area Networks of Excellence (LANEs) within each state to spread the movement.

Campaign activities have been instrumental in changing the landscape. An elevated awareness of re-hospitalization, pressure ulcers, pain, infections, medication use and other key areas has led to national improvements. Staff stability, consistent assignment, and person-centered care are becoming operational priorities.

The Campaign website has become a go-to source for quality improvement tools and resources. The site supports not only Campaign goals, but other national initiatives including the CMS QIN-QIO work, The National Partnership to Improve Dementia Care, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

In August, 2016, The Advancing Excellence in Long Term Care Collaborative (AELTCC) transferred operation of its project, Advancing Excellence in America’s Nursing Homes Campaign, to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). CMS and its contractors sustain the Campaign’s mission to make nursing homes better places to live, work and visit by advancing quality and performance improvement in nursing homes.
